NSM Video: STEM RISE - A Third Ward Partnership
The University of Houston STEM Research Inquiry Summer Experience program (STEM RISE) provides opportunities for high school students to gain exposure to research.
STEM RISE is a collaboration of NSM, the teachHOUSTON program, Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine, and Jack Yates High School in Houston’s Third Ward. During the program, the high school students attend six weeks of classes on the UH campus that are geared exclusively to STEM RISE participants. They also gain experience in UH research labs.
NSM majors in the teachHOUSTON program and UH medical students act as near-peer mentors for the high school students. This summer’s program began June 5 with the NSM and medical students preparing lesson plans; the Yates students will start the program on June 20.
