UH Faculty Attend STEMM White House Summit

Mariam Manuel (teachHOUSTON/Math) and Michelle Carroll Turpin (Assistant Dean for Admissions and Clinical Associate Professor at the UH Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine) were invited to attend the 2024 White House Summit on STEMM Equity and Excellence held on May 1. The event highlighted the need for collaboration in advancing equity in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and Medicine (STEMM).

Michelle Carroll Turpin & Mariam Manuel During the event, the White House, in partnership with the STEMM Opportunity Alliance (SOA), introduced a national strategy designed to pave the way for a more inclusive STEMM ecosystem. The strategy aims to empower 20 million individuals from historically excluded and marginalized communities to engage with and succeed in STEMM fields by 2050. The strategy outlines four critical areas:

  • Addressing the shortage of pre-K-12 STEMM educators
  • Diversifying this workforce
  • Ensuring that higher education STEMM programs are inclusive and accessible, and
  • Eliminating barriers that prevent underrepresented groups from entering and progressing in the STEMM workforce.

By attending this event, Manuel and Turpin had the opportunity to exchange ideas and provided insights on ways to foster equity within STEMM. You can read more on this SOA webpage: STEMM Equity and Excellence 2050: A National Strategy for Progress and Prosperity
