NSM Career Center Launches Hiring Platform, Holds Internship Bootcamp

The NSM Career Center’s platform, HireNSM, is live. Through the platform, over 5,000 NSM undergraduate and graduate students have access to internship and job postings. Students can also access a custom resume builder, a self-guided mock interview module that provides feedback from industry professionals in real time, career development events, and other resources.

In HireNSM, employers can create an account, post available opportunities at their organization, and network with students. The faculty will gain access to the platform in the upcoming weeks. With this access, faculty will be able to promote career development and help their students prepare to successfully enter industry.

Internship Bootcamp Held October 22

On Saturday, October 22, 75 NSM students attended the inaugural NSM Internship Bootcamp from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom. The Bootcamp covered many topics of interest to students, including where to find internship opportunities, using the HireNSM career platform, perfecting a resume, practicing an elevator pitch, salary expectations and negotiations, interviewing skills, maximizing LinkedIn, dressing for success, and representing UH during an internship.

The event featured Ted Talk-style presentations followed by an interactive session. Event speakers and industry panel members participated from NASA Johnson Space Center, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Newton Alpha Industries, and the UH Office of Human Resources. During the event, students were able to have a professional headshot taken.

Below are a few responses from the event survey.

  • “I feel more prepared to find an internship.”
  • “Much more confident! Thank you for this opportunity. It was perfect since we learned how we could build a better resume and be prepared for [an] interview by a seasoned panel, who were so supportive and comfortable to talk to us about any doubts/questions we had.”
  • “I feel cared for, prepared, and feel like I have great people behind me. Before this, I did not know any of y’all and thought I was all alone and feeling overwhelmed in trying to get a job.”

This event will be held again during the Spring 2023 semester.
