NSM Video: TRACER: Studying Pollution's Impact on Thunderstorms
Does pollution make thunderstorms more severe? Researchers study Houston weather to answer this question.
University of Houston research associate professor James Flynn is studying atmospheric particles from industrial and natural sources as part of a larger, national project. TRACER is a research collaboration funded by the Department of Energy Office of Science.
The TRACER experiment is using different instruments around the Houston area to gather data from October 2021 to September 2022. The experiment’s “intensive operational period” lasts from June to September 2022.
