New Proposal Submissions
In July, NSM faculty submitted 28 research proposals (including 6 to NIH, 6 to NSF, 3 to NASA, 2 to DHS, 1 to DoD, and 1 to DOE) corresponding to more than $23.7M in requested funding.
Awarded Research Grants
Frank McKeon (Biology & Biochemistry) was awarded a $2.3M grant from the National Cancer Institute: “Clonal Reconstruction and Targeting of the Correa Sequence.”
Jakoah Brgoch (Chemistry) was awarded a $213K grant from NSF: “Collaborative Research: Designing New Phosphors Using Computational and Experimental Co-Discovery.”
Yunsoo Choi (Earth & Atmospheric Sciences) was awarded a $38K grant from Anyang University (National Institute of Environmental Research): “Aerosol and PM Emission Optimization of the Community Multiscale Air Quality Modeling System (CMAQ) with Deep Neural Networks.”
Omprakash Gnawali (Computer Science) was awarded a $19K grant from the United Nations Foundation: “Maximizing the Environmental and Health Benefits of Clean Cooking in Urban Nepal.”
Preethi Gunaratne (Biology & Biochemistry) was awarded an $8K grant from Baylor College of Medicine (Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas): “Predictive Biomarkers and Novel Therapies for High-Risk Pediatric Liver Cancers.”
Faculty Patents
Zhifeng Ren (Physics), Huaizhou Zhao, Zhongjia Tang (Chemistry), Jiehe Sui, Yuchen Lan, and Qing Jie (Physics) were awarded the following patent: “Thermoelectric Compositions and Methods of Fabricating High Thermoelectric Performance MgAgSb-Based Materials.” U.S. Patent Number: 10,323,305.
Zhifeng Ren (Physics) and Ran He were awarded the following patent: “Systems and Methods of Fabrication and Use of NbFeSb P-Type Half-Heusler Thermoelectric Materials.” U.S. Patent Number: 10,243,127.
Leon Thomsen (Earth & Atmospheric Sciences) and John W. Neese were awarded the following patent: “System and Method for Acquiring and Processing Electromagnetic Survey Data in Hydrocarbon Exploration.” U.S. Patent Number: 10,365,390.
