New Proposal Submissions
In April, NSM faculty submitted 19 research proposals (including 6 to NSF, 3 to DOJ, 2 to NASA, 2 to DOE, and 2 to DoD) totaling over $6.3M in funds.
Awarded Research Grants
Yuxuan Wang (Earth & Atmospheric Sciences) was awarded a $586K grant from NASA: “Investigating the Effects of Drought Stress on Biogenic VOC Emissions and Tropospheric Air Quality.”
Preethi Gunaratne (Biology & Biochemistry) and Bradley McConnell (Pharmacological & Pharmaceutical Sciences) were awarded a $459K grant from National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute: “Gravin Signalosome Protein Coordinates Cardiac Function Via Adrenergic Receptor Signaling.”
Steven Pennings (Biology & Biochemistry) was awarded a $395K grant from the University of Georgia flow thru from NSF: “LTER: Georgia Coastal Ecosystems IV.”
Rebecca Zufall (Biology & Biochemistry) was awarded a $271K grant from NSF: “OPUS: MCS: The Importance of Mitochondrial and Structural Mutations in Generating Fitness Variance in the Ciliate Tetrahymena.”
Maurice Brookhart (Chemistry) was awarded a $240K grant from The Welch Foundation: “PD(II)- and NI(II)-Catalyzed Olefin Polymerizations and Copolymerizations.”
Loi Do (Chemistry) was awarded a $240K grant from The Welch Foundation: “Molecular Engineering of the Second Coordination Sphere for Controlled Olefin Polymerization Catalysis.”
Karl Kadish (Chemistry) was awarded a $240K grant from The Welch Foundation: “Electrochemistry and Spectroelectrochemistry of Compounds with Multiple Redox Centers.”

Aron Laszka (Computer Science) was awarded a $174K grant from NSF: “CRII: SATC: Towards Efficient and Scalable Crowdsourced Vulnerability-Discovery Using Bug-Bounty Programs.”
Julia Wellner (Earth & Atmospheric Sciences) was awarded a $62K grant from Columbia University flow thru from NSF: “U.S. Science Support Program Office Associated with the International Ocean Discovery Program.”
Ioannis Pavlidis (Computer Science) was awarded a $29K supplement grant from NSF: “Collaborative Research: Managing Stress in the Workplace: Unobtrusive Monitoring and Adaptive Interventions.”
