Staff DEI Upcoming Events

Sept. 30 Town Hall Canceled

The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee has canceled the Staff DEI Town Hall planned for September 30. Instead, the town hall will be combined with an October 21 event, described below.

Save the Date: Film Discussion on Oct 21

NSM’s Staff DEI Committee presents a staff discussion of the documentary, Picture a Scientist.

The film chronicles the experiences leading women scientists faced and continue to face as they set out to make STEM open to all. We are introduced to biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks, and geologist Jane Willenbring, who “lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, ranging from brutal harassment to years of subtle slights.”

Please watch the film at your convenience on Netflix from Oct 14–20.

Join us virtually on Thursday, October 21, from 1:30–2:30 pm for a brief Staff DEI Town Hall followed by a discussion of the film. We will talk about how the experiences described in the film reflect our own and how we can use the film to build and promote an inclusive work culture at the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.

Questions to consider before watching the film:

  • Why are you watching this film and what are your goals?
  • As a staff member in the College of NSM, what issues do you expect to see in a film about women and diversity in science?
  • Do you have any current events in mind when going in to watch this film?

See you October 21!
