The Division of Research announced that funding has been made available for the following awards for the 2021–2022 academic year:

  • Grants to Enhance and Advance Research (GEAR)
  • New Faculty Research Program
  • Small Grants Program
  • Bridge Funds Program
  • National Centers Planning Award

Grants to Enhance and Advance Research (GEAR)

The Grants to Enhance and Advance Research (GEAR) program is designed to increase and diversify research funding at UH. Funds for this program are derived from the indirect costs (IDC) of funded research awards. The GEAR program seeks bold new ideas, showing clear evidence of a high likelihood of securing extramural grant funding in the short term and viability as a research program in the long-term.

New Faculty Research Program

The New Faculty Research Program aids faculty who wish to initiate research for the first time and who have not had previous support, exclusive of that as a student or a postdoctoral fellow. Grants up to $6,000 will be awarded to individual faculty members, as part of UH’s efforts to support research and scholarly activity that constitute an integral part of the University’s instructional program.

Small Grants Program

The purpose of the Small Grants Program is to provide funding for unique or unusual research and scholarly projects not routinely supported by departments or colleges or not currently funded from external sources. Preference will be given to proposals from faculty who presently have limited alternative sources of funding and to proposals that have partial financial support from their department or college.

Bridge Funds Program

The purpose of the Bridge Funds Program is to ensure the continuation of research projects that have the highest likelihood of restoring external funding. The program is intended to support full-time tenured faculty, or in rare cases tenure-track faculty, who have no other source of funds, and who can demonstrate that their programs have a reasonable likelihood of renewed funding. For the year 2021–2022, total funds allocated to the program is $300,000.

National Centers Planning Award

President Khator’s UH Preeminence: 50-in-5 initiative calls for a doubling of our national centers from five to 10 centers by 2023. Applying for a center grant is a major effort. In recognition of this effort, the Division of Research is offering internal National Centers Planning Award grants to prepare for a center grant application.
